Summary | 0001047: Dynamic Atmospheric Anomalies
Description | We had a discussion several months ago about the possibility of atmospheric disturbances in the game world that move around dynamically throughout the game world that would affect certain units in particular ways (and also grant the user an interesting effects show in the process). Things like meteor storms, novas, solar flare/sunspots, or even something completely alien that sweeps that game world like the Dyson Sphere - creating havoc with radar and communications systems, damaging nearby units...or even possibly opening a black hole in which ships get sucked into and emerge somewhere at random in the universe. There could also be upgrades to your base (or ships) that would allow tracking of these storm systems as to avoid or use them to your tactical advantage. Perhaps once that option is researched, the galaxy map could help in tracking these systems visually as you plot your courses. There could even be a 'Stormchaser' unit which specializes in cruising around in these anomalies which could have special attributes and bonuses once in place of an event. Particle Illusion would go a long way in creating these effects and an option (as always) to start game play with or without this feature and I think it would serve well with the title of the expansion.

It's definitely something I still want to do, but the amount of testing/implementation time needed for this is more of a load than we can bear right now. The hope is for the NEXT expansion to be able to accomplish this sort of thing. :) |

You could just implement one or two of such anomalies at first, then add new ones with further expansions. The anomalies could be related to the theme of each expansion too. :) The black hole thing made me think of something similar. How about if simply there would occasionally open a random wormhole from planet A to planet B, and it would be open only for, say, 15 minutes. There could be a timer either next to the wormwhole, or in the top left corner of the screen. If you'd want to take advantage of this opportunity, you'd need to move in quick, see what's on the other side, and make an attack or whatnot, and return (if you want your ships back safe) within those 15 minutes. Likewise, if the hole opens up on a player planet that is poorly defended, you'd more likely want to focus some defenses there for the 15 minutes. The AI could perhaps have an increased chance of launching a wave through that wormhole as well. |

Firstly, to X4000: Yes, that would be a massive addition and undertaking for sure. I figured I would just make it official and enter in Mantis before it slips from memory. :) To HitmanN: I like the black hole idea and that would definitely tie in with everything else, as well. I like the idea of having the map a bit more dynamic with options like this this popping up to spice things up. It's attractive especially when you can choose either way to avoid it or utilize it - thus putting little stress on the player with all else that goes on in the game. I would definitely like to see the individual planets entertain natural phenomenon here and there - if not for the graphic stimuli, but also as a vehicle to generate some true "Oh, noes!" moments during game play. |
