Summary | 0000101: Ion Starship
Description | I am a big fan of using predominately starships, especially the flagship-zenith-spire path, and one of the funnest elements of playing starfleet in a coop game is supporting other players by warping in my capital ships to battle enemy starships, ion cannons and defences that would otherwise cut a swathe through my buddies fleet ships. One thing I am noticing, though, is that there is not really that many 'hard-counters' to fleet ships requiring the attention of my starships; from the other direction, I feel the lack of a player-unlockable starship for shredding enemy fleets or garrisoning neutered planets (well, there is the warbird, but that isnt player unlockable and fabricators are rare. there is the proposed tesla ship, but that isnt likely to be player unlockable either.) To fit this niche, I propose a line of starships that has a long ranged attack capable of cost effectively cutting through fleet ships, but that is otherwise fairly ineffective against turrets, strutures and other starships; a defensive line if you will, with corresponding low speed and a degree of fragility that makes it vunerable to the heavy cannons of anything upward of the light starship- Starship duels are cool. Enter the Ion Starship line! player-unlockable starship line: three MK levels of increasing power. slow move speed, mediocre armour, and high cost makes it best employed defensively or in standoff roles low shipcap decreases with MK similar to flagship-zenith-spire line (3, 2, 1) the Ion starship is armed with a weapon similar to that seen on the Ion Cannon, capable of instantly killing enemy fleet ships of equal or lower MK than the Ion Starship upon impact. however, the smaller, mobile platform of the Ion Starship entails a number of concessions to the weapon's power; a limited range, perhaps 50% larger than that of the dreadnaught at MK I, and a much lower rate of fire than the stationary Ion Cannon (but which would increase with MK) To further qualify this weakness, the Ion Ship is temporarily immobilized when firing its weapon, which disallows it from both firing and moving; to move in combat, the ship must be de-activated. In game terms, I figured this could be acheived by having the Ion Starship weapon paralyse the Ion Starship each time it fires, for the duration of the reload time. The Collosal energy requirements of Ion weaponry necessitate that the Ion Starship be completely unshielded, making it vunerable to even long range attacks; likewise, the internal structure of fully-loaded capacitors and small threshold for energy overload makes the vessel highly vunerable to minor-electric attacks, which can potentially overload the reactor systems and cause significant internal damage. This makes sallying out with teleport raiders and teleport battlestations an effective counter. Like other ion weapons, it is almost completely ineffective against targets that it cannot instant-kill Also likely to be countered by the future-planned carrier-ships, which come in huge numbers and are completely expendible. Hardcounters fleet ships of lower MK, especially those with low-shipcaps Hardcountered by all starships, teleport raiders, teleport battlestations, deflector drones, zenith mirrors, bulletproof fighters. The MK III Ion Starship takes a different form to the lower MK, and has a different name: the Ion Moon. Larger, with a more spherical, battlestation like sprite; moves much more slowly, and is tougher (and Shipcapped at 1) The Ion Moon has infinite range, like the Ion Cannon, and has a faster rate of fire than the Ion Starships (but still lower than the stationary Ion Cannon). although MK III, It only insta-kill MK I and MK II. The ships would be very useful on the defensive, or keeping travel lanes open, but less use on the attack with their inability to attack defenses and low resilience. For the AI, they nessciacate the player use starships, teleport units or clever use of transports or otherwise suffer casualities, and give another layer of fun and purpose to starship-heavy players in coop games. For the Player, they provide a variety of defensive utility and perform as a lesser version of the AIs Ion Cannon. with an appropriate Knowlege cost I dont see them being especially overpowered. I love this sprite and it took me forever to make, so be kind! I have a resized 256x256 one for the MK I Ion starship, and a moon is in progress for the MK III. I am open to suggestion as to how to make the MK I look like an MK II any thoughts? Originally by: superking http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,5732.0.html
