Summary | 0005723: Bring back mana drops
Description | Basically I'm finding that I'm spending a good deal of time waiting for my mana to recharge, which is surely not a part of good play? I think very small mana drops would at least make me feel like I'm being rewarded for taking down enemies quickly rather than punished.

You know, linking the sort of drop to the area hit isn't a bad idea in general. That way, you could increase the chance of health drops if you first slow enemies, etc. And you could add a chance of mana drops if you make a lot of head shots on that enemy first. |
Maybe this is a balance issue, as I don't seem to run out of mana very much. Which spells do you normally use? |
Fireball, basically, and ride the lightning. Usually ball lightning as second choice if I see fire resistance. I don't run out of it very often, mostly when I'm fighting a huge mess of enemies in a crowded cave or battlefield mission. Especially with battlefield missions I try to fly over the enemy crowd headshotting, and it seems kinda perverse that even when I succeed and take out four-five skelebots the next step is standing around waiting. That's exactly where mana drops would come in handy --- if you're using creeping death on every skelebot dwarf you see, it makes sense that you have to wait; but when you're in a big fight it seems to me that you should be able to keep going as long as you score kills efficiently, and be forced to retreat when you don't. |
It's worth looking into. I know RTL uses a TON of mana. I've basically stopped using it because of that. Perhaps that's the crux of the issue here. |
Hmm, perhaps. Shall I make another mantis about reducing it? I'd really like to be able to use it regularly; it adds a lot to what you can do in terms of fun dodging. But if Chris wants it balanced to be more special, I'd like to suggest having an option to turn off auto-use --- it's a very easy spell to use by mistake. |
On second thoughts, I think I still want mana drops. I enjoy RTL enough that I am just going to keep using it for dodging at its current cost; I understand that the game imposes a cost for abusing a nice spell, but it seems like one you should be able to defray a bit with more skill, right, instead of just having to pay in time? If the cost remained high but you could make it back with drops, that would still discourage me from using it against a boss or something where I have a high-intensity situation and not a lot of drops coming during the fight. I'd certainly suggest that drops would add a lot less to your mana than health drops do to your health; I feel like you should have to be really really efficient to be able not to have to think about mana at all. |
I don't think we need a separate ticket right now. When Chris gets a chance to weigh in, we'll see what he says. I agree that if the mana cost is going to be high, it's auto-use should probably be optional. |

Cool, thanks for your time! |
