Summary | 0005188: Manually Harvesting Gems Becomes Tedious Quickly
Description | Dear Sirs, Manually harvesting gems from dungeons has become tedious quite quickly. My civilization is level 32 or so at the moment and delving for high level gems is getting in the way of the rest of the game (mind you, I love this game, though). Perhaps a mechanic where you can send a villager or two a turn to attempt gem harvesting from discovered dungeons could be added (with no guarantee of success, mind you); or a way to enter a dungeon at a deeper level than the usual entrance if your civilization level is within a certain range. Sincerely, Grailer_Diomede

I don't think that we'd ever do automated harvesting of crafting resources, honestly -- that's kind of like having the game play itself. I think that the core problem isn't that you're having to manually harvest the gems, but rather that simply the process isn't interesting enough yet. In other words, that there's not more of interest in the undergrounds, and that there's not more kinds of bosses, etc. On the other hand, being able to send out NPCs to harvest a gem with a risk that they might die could be interesting if done really sparingly. But that's not really getting at the core of what you're asking, I don't think, which is really to get rid of the tedium. Since gems are used in almost all the recipes they are inherently meant to be mildly rare, and the things you can craft with them are thus a bit limited. It's a tricky thing that we haven't balanced perfectly yet, but I think that the lack of variety in the underground bosses is one big detractor at the moment. |

You say "entering at a deeper level", are you trying to dig down to level 40 from a level 32 cave? The option that lets you enter "deeper" in a cave is called picking a higher level chunk. |

How about having them scout for us? So we could get reports about X gems of type whatever available in a region. Just something to let us make more informed choices of where to go. |

First, thank you for the prompt consideration. Second, you hit the nail on the head with your response, x4. Third, I've streamlined my idea a bit thanks to the comments: -The lack of boss variety isn't that much of a detractor (it would be nice to see more bosses, yes, but that will come with time). It seems that more variety in dungeon scenery and perhaps a greater prevalence of overtly dangerous dungeon areas (such as the high heat strata) would go farther to increase interest in spelunking from my standpoint than boss variety necessarily would. -I'm aware of chunk limitations; my thought was it would be nice to be able to enter into the high heat strata of dungeons directly instead of having to descend to them (so I suppose I meant enter a more dangerous level of the dungeon). -Being able to send a villager to scout a dungeon's resources sounds like an excellent idea, perhaps at the risk of their death due to dungeons being dangerous places. |
