Summary | 0028499: Finding Food Finding Water Quest flow issues [buildings unlock prematurely maybe]
Description | Currently it is possible to enter a state of ‘what to do now?’ By completing the find food investigation you will unlock all of the buildings needed to generate and store food and water. Once you build all of these buildings everything works as expected except for water. In the attached save I have 4 well and cisterns built and one water storage. I know that I should be generating well over 1700 water a turn, which should be stored/consumed. But that isn’t happening (because I haven’t done the find water investigations on the map). However, in my situation I began these quests, paused, then returned many hours later to the game and it’s not clear to me that my powered and built water buildings aren’t working because I need to go investigate water on the map. I think a simple fix is to lock the water based buildings behind the completion of the water based investigations. Ie. You cannot see or build anything water related until you have completed the over world water activities.

Well and cisterns produce groundwater, and it's asking for potable water, and the tech to purify the groundwater is locked behind the investigation. If that isn't made clear enough by the game there might still be an issue here? Locking even the groundwater buildings behind the water investigation would certainly make things simpler... I did wonder about the buildings myself, but I eventually noticed it was groundwater rather than potable water, and somewhere ( I forget where exactly) there is flavourtext stating just how contaminated the groundwater is. |
|
Yes I did read the flavor text, but it slipped my mind. The other bit of reasoning why I think all water things should be locked behind that investigation, is that if you stop playing after building the well and return (say the next day) you may just assume that you should have water now but don't, and be at a bit of a loss unless you remember that flavor text etc. |

I was on the fence for a bit, but actually I think that this is a case where the confusion is highly beneficial. Anyone who is confused has not realized that potable water and groundwater are different. The interface has all of the information required in order to figure this out. I think it's more long-term damaging for people to not realize the difference in the two resources. In general, as soon as you select the water mission at all, it unlocks the well and cistern. This creases a clear cause and effect of "oh that is not good enough, so I need to go do something else." For someone reading fast, or taking a break at just the wrong time, they may miss that entirely. Which is fine. But the game then blocking them until they figure out what's going on is probably what I'd call a teaching moment. |
