Description | I was delighted to see this added! The colour of the damage bar blends in with enemy attack lines and with some of the reddish soil in places (see the screenshot for an example) A more minor note: I think it may be better if the red damage bar filled in from the right instead. This would be more consistent with how health bars work. | ||||

Thanks! * Added a black border around the incoming damage indicators, to make them more visible against a variety of background colors. On the second issue of the direction of the bar, I think we tend to read information from left to right, and so the nature of the information is important. If this was an overlay on the health bar, going from left to right would definitely be the right call. As it is, it's a bit ambiguous, and I kind of see it both ways. But I tried it the other way, and it felt really confusing, because now the black feels like the information I'm given, instead of the red. Overall, health is read from left to right as "amount remaining," with a black portion to the right to show what is lost. On the damage indicators, I interpret it from left to right as "damage incoming," with a black portion to the right to show what portion won't be taken away. I fully recognize that this could be interpreted the opposite just as legitimately. The main problem is that there's not a common idiom in videogames for this information that isn't layered on top of an existing health bar. |
