Summary0028243: Getting the player used to using the map for movement
DescriptionThe tutorial messages actually say that you should use the map for movement, but it doesn't really encourage or force it. The limited range for LOS + street sense detection means that most of the time you don't need to do it. Having some task to force the player to do it and to get more familiar with the arrangement of the city would be healthy for the player's experience. Perhaps something like having more discussions early on that are visible on the map (with larger icons) and then having them so far apart that the player is encouraged/forced/tutorialized to use the map to move to them.

I actually want the player to feel that they don't know the layout of the city, and that the city is large and intimidating and contains untold depths.

In that sense, it's more of an adventure game outside of your direct areas of influence than a strategy game, if that makes sense?

One of my big beefs with a lot of strategy games is that players wind up feeling like they understand the entire map without any surprises, and then even if the map is absolutely giant, it winds up feeling small in actuality. A variety of games like Civ handle this by you never really getting full visibility of the city.

This game does it by making the city huge, a bit confusing, and something you strike out in a variety of directions of as-needed. You know the locations of your own stuff, and certain things right next to your stuff, and beyond that you're going on missions into territory you don't really understand well. That's the general intent.
