Summary | 0002235: Tutorials do not properly set handicap and/or does not warn
Description | First the basics: It seems if you start a tutorial it does not set the handicap to zero. This is probably related to 0002234 which was discovered by my friend while we were diagnosing this bug but we decided to report this separetely since we're not sure and this one seems more important. You can easily reproduce this by starting the AI War fresh, going in to campaign mode, changing the handicap, quit campaign mode and start a tutorial. You will find your handicap is set to whatever you set it in campaign mode. This also happens if you load a game with another handicap then quit the game (not Ai War) and start a tutorial. Perhaps one of the biggest issues, if you join a server (don't need to start game) where the handicap for the main player (slot 1) is set to something else, this becomes the setting in your campaign mode main player/slot 1 if you quit the game (but not AI War). So if you then start a tutorial you'll find yourself with a handicap even though you changed no setting yourself! This handicap is saved and loads with the tutorial save game (as expected unlike the zero handicap) so once you've started a tutorial with this unintetional low handicap you'll need to start again. If this is intentional, I believe there should be a clear warning. Although it seems better to me there should be an option to change handicap for the tutorial if that is desired rather then going by the currently set handicap.

Some not so important background info: I heard of this game from my friend about a week ago so decided to try the trial. The first tutorial went fine but in the second and third I had major problems with resources. I had made a few minor mistakes in what I built but it seemed a bit extreme how long it took to build stuff/how bad my resources were, still I went on. Upon trying the intermediate tutorial I was again surprised at how difficult it was. To even build the 20 turrets + 3 tractor turrents and a few ships to defend myself along with scouts it took over an hour. And that was after I turned off all the power plants and other stuff that weren't necessary at the time. Then I found I had to built 30 of each ship to attack and to do so it took over 3 hours (I was worried the trial would run out since it still shows the trial time but it seems to go on which is what the documentation suggests it should do)! I let the game run at max speed without interfering (since I semi-cheated and did the stuff before anything happened so I wasn't attacked) but my computer is a bit slow and I eventually gave up for a few days. I was a bit suspicious at the time, I had noticed each harvester was only giving 1 crystal but only did a quick search and didn't find out this was wrong. A few days later I spoke to my friend who didn't have any of the problems I had. It became obvious he never suffered from the same resource issues and had major positive resources from the beginning (whereas I had negative until I turned of most of my stuf). After some testing we found out the problem was I was set to -300% handicap! This wasn't intentional. I'm pretty sure what happened is I was fooling around in multiplayer with my friend. He created the server and put -300 for himself (can't change me of course) but of course he was in slot 1 so this changed my settings. This seems urgent to me since people playing the tutorials are likely to be inexperienced with the game. In my case particularly given the extreme handicap I suspected there was something wrong, though thought it may have been because of the beta version. Others may not realise and may just decide the game is too hard/annoying particularly if they don't have such an extreme handicap. |

Reduced to high priority as its "parent" 0002234 has only high as well, and multiple games per application run is not that common of an occurrence. |

Thanks! * If a handicap was previously set on a player, then it wouldn't get reset properly when a new game or tutorial was started. Fixed. |
