Summary | 0004465: stuck going left
Description | I just started the game for the first time and applied all the updates. After I created a world and chose a character, as the starting town came into view for the tutorial, my character started running left. Holding D or right arrow will get the character to stand in place but none of the other movement keys, besides space bar, will have any noticeable effect. I can not play the game. I know it's some kind of input problem but I don't think it's my hardware that is causing the problem as my other programs work just fine. I don't know how to get around it or fix it.

Tried alt-tabbing back out and then back in, pressing all the keys (notably A) to see if the key-up event will clear them from being "stuck", etc? Do you have any input devices other than a standard keyboard and mouse attached to the computer? If so, does anything change if those are disconnected? You could try rebinding "move left" on the controls window and see if that helps. |
I tried as you suggested but it didn't change anything. I don't have any extra input devices, just the standard keyboard and mouse. Rebinding both "move left" options to z and restarting the game still leaving me stuck going left. It is just the tutorial that has this problem? I could try skipping it perhaps. |
The tutorial isn't really separate from the game... this is just really odd, I don't recall anyone running into this. I guess you could try unbinding Move Left (both the main and the alternate; by default those are A and left-arrow) completely and restarting. If it's still moving left then then it's almost certainly not an input problem. |
Tried it, it still moved left. I also tried reinstalling the game earlier and the problem persisted. |
I have seen this problem. Press the shift key plus the arrow keys a few times. I have seen it in other games as well. |
It didn't help. :/ |
Try removing the keyboard. |
Unplugging the keyboard does not effect it. Other keys work just fine and I don't have this problem with other programs. |
I also tried reinstalling with a different install to no effect. |

This is really odd -- never heard of something like this, and have not seen it with any other players here. It really sounds like there is some gamepad that is plugged in and has it's analog stick mashed to the left. You could try unbinding the gamepad controls in particular from moveleft, and see if that helps. Something is telling the unity engine you're holding down one of the keys (gamepad or keyboard) bound to left movement, no question about it. Unbinding them all and restarting the game should fix it for sure (there are two keyboard keys and one gamepad button bound to moveleft, so be sure and get all three). Then you could add them back in and see when it starts goig crazy again to locate your problem key/button. |

Mystery solved, I had an original Xbox controller hooked into the back of my computer, where I couldn't see that it was plugged in. I haven't used it in months. The controller was resting on top of my desktop without anything touching it. My guess is that a gamepad calibration is needed; if I were to want to use it. I can play the game just fine now. I'm glad it turned out to be a simple matter after all. Thanks for the help everyone. |

Glad that fixed it! Something to be aware of with many gamepads: if the analog stick is not in the default position when the gamepad is first plugged in, that tends to mess up the calibration. Simply unplugging the gamepad and plugging it back in generally fixes that. If that doesn't, then I agree you probably need to use the windows control panel's gamepads section to run through the calibration steps; all directinput calibration is handled at the OS level. Cheers! |
Haha, phew, I was running pretty low on ideas on how to fix it :) Glad it wasn't some strange "On Windows 7 64-bit OSes with serial numbers whose canonical integer representations are divisible by a 4-digit prime number, Unity interprets the A key as always pressed down". |
Me too, though I still run Windows XP. Incidentally, the menu selection highlight strobing disappeared as well when I restarted the game after the controller was unplugged. I had a hunch that the two problems were related, at least in my case. |
