Summary0004418: Fire DoTs are a little extreme.
DescriptionWas running to an evil outpost in a level 19 region. A fire bat bit me and I watched as my life bar drained to about 75% max health. The problem is I'm civ level 50, and every other level 19 mob is completely trivial. (Was wearing the heat suit, but that probably doesn't matter.)

That one bite did 7,084 damage with the DoT effect.

New relevant info: Another character suffered a "mere" 4,658 damage from a single application of dragon breath (monster level 57). I think something fishy is going on here.

For direct comparison, a standard level 19 bat did 13 damage when I let it bite me.

Yeah the fire effects are incredibly painful. I cringe when I see fire bats flying around.

I don't go to evergreen forests at my level, actually. This time I figured "Hey, it's 31 levels lower than me. It can't be dangerous." Eeeee-nope.

I think using a health pot should negate the effect too.

Can we get this looked at soonish? In 0.517 I'm running into a lot of dragons guarding things, and they regularly kill me to death in seconds, unless I avoid all their fire.

AAAh god fire bats are the bane of all life at the moment.

Harbingers of death, made flesh to reap a bountiful harvest of bloody player corpses, fashioning a throne of skulls from which they rule all monster kind with an iron claw!

But yeah, 1 hit from an equal level bat burnt off 180% of my hp (went into fight at 80%, that burnt through, pot heals to full, and brunt from 100% to dead again XD).

I, for one, will be sad to see our fire bat overlords go :-P

Okay, finally fixed:

* The damage done to players over time by being on fire is now back into the realms of sanity instead of being an insta-kill situation.
** Previously it was incorrectly basing its attack power on the player's on attack power, so that really made for fast death.
** Now the formula is based on the level of the chunk you are in, relative to your current level, and also accounting for the action difficulty of the game.
** For the math minded, here's the formula:
*** Base damage:
**** Featherweight: 5
**** Apprentice: 10
**** Hero: 15
**** Master Hero: 20
**** The Chosen One: 25
*** Relative level percentage calculated as:
**** Base Relative level: Chunk Level - Civ Level, clamped to -10/10.
**** Multiply base relative level times two, and add 20, to double the scale of changes.
**** Divide the new number by 10, and that gives you a percentage ranging from 0 (when you are 10 levels higher than enemies) to 4 (when you are 10+ levels lower than the chunk).
*** Final damage = base damage multiplied by the relative level percentage.
** Thanks to many players for reporting how out of control the prior fire over time damage was; the dragon breath and fire bats won't be nearly so insane anymore.
