Summary | 0004335: "Takes 90% cold damage" in character selection window is confusing
Description | I took a char with this attribute for the first time -- went into settlement management and found my character dead, apparently from taking 300 cold damage/sec (from the report window) It took me a bit to figure out what was going on -- apparently there is some ambient damage (3000/sec) in the ice age area, including the home settlement. Probably I need a snowsuit. Anyway, the whole thing was unexpected, from taking damage while in another game window, to taking so much w/o clear idea of what to do next. I tried with another char -- couldn't craft a snowsuit and dress quickly enough to avoid dying. Some thoughts: 1) Make it more clear when the character is taking ambient damage, and reduce the rate. Right now a L6 char takes < 10 seconds to die in the home settlement. 2) Make it more clear that an area will cause ambient damage and how much (the text hints at it, but didn't realize it was an actual mechanic until later, because some characters are resistant from the beginning) 3) Improve the text of the snowsuit description to include the game mechanics it protects from. What was confusing to me is the combination of text that says ice age characters are already protected, but apparently not by a snowsuit, because they don't have them in their inventory (nor do they show as 'dressed' in a snowsuit). I thought maybe they would be used by NPCs while farming resources, or something. 4) No character should die while in a menu/map in the home base. That's just wrong. Probably they shouldn't die in any case (unless it's clearly under seige, or something). The Ilari are supposed to sustain people, right? :-) Now that I've been through a few char deaths trying things out, I have a feel for the mechanics, but it shouldn't come to that.

Probably should have added my original thought -- text should read "Character resists 90% ambient cold damage", and have all characters with 100% resist show 100% resist, for consistency. |
Just encountered this myself. Strongly suggest removing ambient cold damage in settlements. Seeing as everyone starts off in the ice age, it makes it pretty hard to choose a non-ice age character if you pop out and then have to craft and wear a snowsuit in under ten seconds to not die. |
Well it is a mistake you should only make once. Once you have a character die from the cold in a settlement, it should get you to make a snowsuit and then you won't have to worry about it ever again. |
Yeah, true. I guess having my home settlement wiped out by a vengeful ghost is a pretty small price to pay for finding out that you need a special piece of equipment to survive for more than a minute in the same area all of my previous characters have gone for safety. |
Maybe characters can be protected, if not completely, a good bit by the Ilari? This would at least give you some time to make a suit if you chose such a character. |
A character should not be able to spawn in a ice age settelement in the first case if they don't have a snowsuit. I mean, how did they get there in the first place? Maybe just giving new non ice age characters a free suit (already equipped) or actually force the settelement to have suits before they can invite non ice age characters to thier ice age settlement. |
The Ilari now provide protection for characters from ambient cold in the settlements, solving the most direct issues here. Beyond that it should be working essentially as expected. |
