Summary0004166: STRATEGIC BALANCING: (1) Lower food consumption and (2) allow players to demolish existing structures to recover the resources.
DescriptionI believe the food production and consumption algorithm has some issues. Consider my current game. I have three settlements:

Snowball - 11 people, 2 farms with 120 production, 440 consumption
Dustball - 3 people, 2 farms with 120 production, 140 consumption
Calamity - 3 people, 1 farm with 60 production, 110 consumption

With the two 3-person settlements, it's possible to be positive in food production ONLY if all 3 people are farmers. For the 11-person settlement, I'd have to run 8 farms. I realize that it might have been possible to stay positive in food had I focused all early development in farms, though it seems there are very few people left over to do anything else.

I have a recommendation (or two):

(1) Decrease per capita food consumption. Currently it appears that one farm can feed 1.5 people (approximately) and those numbers simply are not realistic, both in real life and in actual game play.

(2) Allow buildings to be demolished and their resources recovered. If resources are lost in the demolition, I would recommend keeping the loss small, as it's hard enough already to get granite for buildings. But being able to essentially "sell back" mistakenly placed buildings would allow me to balance my economy.

At present, all my settlements are on a slow grind to Zero Food, and there's nothing I can do about it.

This also applies to granite. I built a granite quarry in one of my settlements, but the quarry is only producing 6 granite per turn. At that rate, I'd need to go forward over 30 turns just to earn enough granite to buy one new building.

Same goes for wood. My woodcutter's apparently a homocidal maniac with an axe and makes all the trees shudder. He has some cool sounding attribute that I forget off the top of my head. But for all his glory, he produces 9 wood per turn. At that rate, 22 turns are needed to produce 200 wood.

Balance that with the food problem, and you'll see that it's impossible to win the strategic meta game unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing from the word "go."

Do you have a well built in your settlement? If you don't, then your NPCs morale is capped at 30 which massively hurts their production.

Was just about to say the same. With 30 morale, food production is 60 per farm (90 with green thumb). With 50 morale, it's 100, which is enough to feed 2.5 people. By building homes and putting your farmers (and other people) in them, their morale (and production) increases even more.

Yea, thoughts on strategic balance are welcome but first make use of the tools that are already provided: a high-morale NPC can easily feed 2 others plus themselves, and if they have the Green-Thumb trait it gets pretty high.

But in general the macrogame simply isn't balanced at all, I haven't endeavored to claim that it is :) Lots of changes and new mechanics coming into it before a real balancing could begin.
