Summary | 0003653: AI War 5.000 -- Unable to use keyboard shortcuts in-game | ||||
Description | Discovered this issue with AI War: If you have had a joystick or gamepad hooked up to your PC at one time but not actively connected at the time you start the game, AI War will not accept keyboard input. The game works just fine, but none of the keyboard shortcuts work. (However, the chat bar entry at the game setup lobby does works.) In the logs I was seeing: ErrorsReportedByEngine----------------------------------- 7/12/2011 1:53:38 AM (5.000) -----------------------------------Error-----------------------------------Log String: <RI.Hid> Failed to read input report: The device is not connected. Stack Trace: (repeats several times) I went to Control Panel / Game Controllers. I had one joystick, my Microsoft Sidewinder Feedback Pro stick, which was listed as Disconnected. (I usually leave the joystick unplugged and put away when not in use.) By simply removing this joystick reference in Game Controllers, the error messages went away and keyboard input resumed working in AI War. My guess is that when AI War (or Unity?) is enumerating active HID devices, if it encounters an error for whatever reason then it stops and never finishes testing the rest of the devices. Yep, you're exactly right in what's going on, and in your diagnosis of why. We've mentioned this to Unity after one other person found this issue, but no mention of movement yet from them. For our part, the call that is erroring out is way down in the Unity code stack and not something that we can touch. :/ |

Note that I had briefly upgraded to 5.011 and this was never a problem, so it's possible that this bug has already been resolved in the beta. I'm not running 5.011 right now due to playing with a friend who is running the OSX version and has had problems updating to 5.011. So we're sticking to 5.000 for now. |

Huh! That would be interesting if that's the case, and they silently fixed it in one of their more recent versions. We upgraded the version of Unity slightly between 5.0 and 5.011, I _think_. Been a while. ;) If your friend is on Steam and has the bad updater, s/he can fix that through this post: http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,8748.0.html |

Ah, bummer. I hope they get this fixed soon! I've toyed with Unity but haven't used it yet for a released game. Nice engine, when it's working properly I suppose. :) |
