Summary | 0003612: Planetary Shields
Description | In essence, these would automatically take the damage in the place of the units (and structures) on the planet. It wouldn't act like a normal forcefield though (i.e. no displaced units, and if player-owned, no damage reduction). Its health would be about the same as an AI forcefield (so a core planetary shield would be a pain to deal with, while a Mk. I would be a minor nuisance). Of course, this means that in order to deal any damage at all to anything on the planet, you either have to have forcefield immune units, deploy an EMP (which would be the only way to capture one of these) or simply do enough damage to kill the shield. It would also be nice to include these among the structures able to be built by the trader.

Interesting idea. Unfortunately it would produce some very gnarly situations; tremendous firepower that you cant even pick away at while you trudge across to the only vulnerable unit on the planet. My feelings are mixed on this one. |

Ah, no, you misunderstood (or I wasn't very clear). The units wouldn't be invincible, they just wouldn't take damage. If you fire on any unit, the damage is instead dealt to the planetary shield. So you could warp in, unleash hell on a small Mk. I fighter, and destroy the shield. After a while. EDIT: And since there are always wormhole guard posts, there's always something to attack as you warp in to deal damage to the shield. |

I did misunderstand but I feel that my concerns are still valid; It takes quite a while for even a cap full bombers to take down a normal AI forcefield MK IV and Core. It is quite difficult to get take that forcefield out when being fired upon but I can still assault the rest of the planet and possibly find a different solution. If there were a planetary size forcefield of that capacity then I would consider that planet completely avoidable until late game if and when I had a fleet capable of taking it down. Hopefully the planet didn't have a Core Shield Generator, Advanced Research Station, Spire Shard, nor was a bottle neck close the your home planet. Over all, I dislike unsurmountable challenges, especially when it has the possibility of be next to your home planet. I realize that this is far from impossible but at this extent it make for a grindy and unnecessary challenge. |
