Summary | 0003058: Idea for Gravity Drains Balance (AI Balance)
Description | Copied from http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,8426.msg74554.html#msg74554 What might actually help balance grav drains is making themfaster. They have very short range (2000 or so?), so they will be in return-fire range of anything they actually want to shoot. Making them faster, so that they close that distance faster and come in enemy-fire range faster, will probably enable the player to spend less time actually being gravity drained. I say this because 8000 range for a ship that has a cap of 49 (I think it was - even a cap of 24 this applies) is still going to be problematic, especially when attacking enemy planets. Of course, this makes it so that the player MUST engage the gravity drains, but that's already something of an issue with them. The speed could be justified as abusing space-time continuum to act as a speed booster - if they placed their gravity singularity marginally in front of the ship, all other ships would still have difficulty getting away from them, but they'd get a pretty major speed boost as their ship is constantly sucked toward it. The main point is that one gravity guardian is a problem, so 20 gravity drains is likely to be a huge problem. Making it easier to get to the gravity drains to kill them will go a long way in balancing them for AI usage without having to nerf them significantly.

So if I understand your suggestion correctly, you are proposing to: - Reduce the base ship cap of gravity drains (affecting both the AI and human players) - Normalize their attack power, HP, cost, and build times accordingly - Increase their movement speed - Let them keep their 8000 gravity range Is this right? |

I had the though that maybe it is impossible to balance regularly build-able mobile, gravity units are impossible to balance considering the current gravity mechanics. I'm not going to copy all of my further musing on this, but you can read them at http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,8426.msg74585.html#msg74585 |
