Summary | 0002728: Context-sensitive music player
Description | It might be just me, but sometimes it's just slightly jarring when not much is happening and then I suddenly get a track like 'Metal', or when I'm in the middle of a tense assault or fighting off a big wave and I'm listening to 'Midnight' or 'Marisa'. What I'm thinking is perhaps having the music player somehow detect what's going on (perhaps based on # of ships doing damage to each-other) and change tracks accordingly. Or is there something I don't know about that would make this difficult?

The problem is that there is always so much going on that it wouldn't work that well in practice. You're almost always fighting somewhere, or you're flipping rapidly between fighting and not. Those sorts of things don't work well for context sensitive music. I think the best example of context sensitive music that I've seen was Age of Empires III, but even that didn't work super well in my mind -- and it requires very ambient, low-key music in the main, I think, Anyway, this is something we considered doing from as long back as Pablo was on the project (pre 1.0), but we decided it's just not feasible for AI War for design reasons. |
|
Perhaps rather than linking music to what's on screen, have the usual music most of the time, but bring in special tracks to announce major events, colony rebellion, cross planet attacks, With short happy riffs for capturing a planet for the first time, destruction of a data center, etc, and short sad riffs for loss of captured buildings or command stations. |
|
Yeah, that part is something we've thought about exploring more for the future, but not right now. We actually have some Chase music in Light of the Spire that isn't used that was for that sort of purpose. |

Let me guess, a techno + piano remix of the Benny Hill theme? :D |
