Summary | 0002597: Spire Ship names are all abbreviations, hard to grasp at a glance
Description | Playing through fallen spire, I'm noticing the selection names for the majority of the units are just things like S-SY, S-SR, S-DD. Maybe this is intentional but they look out of place. Sure most of the selection names are pretty short, but you can at least tell what you're clicking on. With a single unit it's no problem, but when you select a fleet containing one or two spire ships you don't really know what you've selected from the selection box. Also the build tabs on the shipyard are very terse. FF, DD, CA? Hard to tell what they are without mousing over them. Not at all a big issue, but it would pretty things up a bit. :)

They are pretty commenly used naval abbreviations. Basicly they tell you the class of ship: -FF: frigate -DD: Destroyer -CA: Cruiser/armored "When the Navy first started to put hull numbers of ships, they started with basic designations: BB=battleship, CC=cruiser, DD=destroyer, SS=submarine. The letters for doubled, as different or additional letters were for denoting subtypes, such as CA for heavy cruiser and CL for light cruiser." |

Well I suppose if I was in the navy that would be fine. As it is though, they're just letters to me. Knowing the reference is interesting, so I'm not disparaging that. But when you boil it down, I still don't know what they mean without just rote memorization. |
