Description | See http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,8110.0.html Basically, Impulse Reaction Emitters seem extremely weak compared to other bonus ships or triangle ships, with very niche applications. Their main strength seems to be against golems, but without hard golems/spirecraft turned on this doesn't come into play. They hit hard against fortresses but would get pulverised. There are only a small handful of high enough energy starships for them to outperform, say, bombers. The last change to their damage formula reduced their already low damage against medium-energy units such as guardians and starships (1500 to 5000 energy). I've had hundreds of Emitters fail to take out a single raid starship. Since these ships are useless against fleet ships, it would be good if they were better than basic triangle ships to take on guardians/starships. I'm not sure how to achieve this - you could make the energy damage bonus non-linear, but if I recall you guys were against that. You could also ramp up the modifier while keeping the current cap, which would mean the same effectiveness against golems etc while improving effectiveness vs starships/guardians. | ||||

I believe it is already non-linear, there's a square root in the formula. What hurts IREs is that many AI-only ships have very low energy consumptions. |

From 4.050: "Damage/energy scaling changed from multiplying by sqrt(energy)/10 to multiplying by 1 + (energy/1024), with a maximum multiplier of 30. Note that partial units of 1024 are counted, so something with an energy use of 200 will take roughly 1.2x damage. " So it used to have a square root, but not any more. The new formula may actually give slightly more multiplier (I'm not sure if they meant that to be 1 + sqrt(energy)/10, but yeah. |

Going to jump in and say that "yes IRE need a buff." They used to MURDER fortresses and Force fields (especially the Mk5 ones) and here and there kill ships. Now they seem to be useless. |
