Summary | 0002509: Tweak Demo mode to a very simple, full campaign and "tutor mode" multi.
Description | Rather than forcing an artificial time limit on demo time, I would rather have had all the extra features grayed out. Limiting to simple ships no minor factions or AI modifiers (maybe allow reveal random AI types) or AI plots, only simple maps of a limited size, with a maximum difficulty of 7 and the easier AI. In this way, a new player and potential customer is eased into the full game from the tutorial with the most basic true campaign, feels no artificial pressure in trying to beat the main game in only three hours (which raises the likelihood of mistakes and frustration, something you don't want to do to a potential customer) and they get the full satisfaction of winning a proper campaign or two. For multiplayer, rather than having one demo player limiting everyone's fun, it would make more sense for the demo player to only be able to host games like above, with any number of demo players being otherwise treated normally, but when joining a game they couldn't "build" themselves, be treated as a dealt in player right from the start of a game they joined. The Demoer who joins Unable to own their own HCS, have "allow others to control my ships" locked on, and able to save the game, but unable to load it while still a demo. This scenario would let a long-time fan introduce the game to a friend with no frustration, and give the newbie a taste of all the full version's features. Limiting the number of demo players to only one in a game would be reasonable, to keep the amount of confusion down while still allowing experienced players to tutor their friends, and build up their own AI war squadron.

There's not really any incentive for us to reimagine a lot of this stuff. People seem happy with the demo, and the only purpose of the demo is for them to figure out if they like the game (well, and also to prevent them from enjoying so much of the game that they don't have any remaining incentive to buy the full version). I think it accomplishes that. |
