Summary | 0002503: Test the current system, use results to manage performance profile.
Description | AFAICT, major action on a different planet doesn't affect framerate much, but being on that heavily active planet gives lag no matter how little of it you're looking at, until you turn down the performance profile. So why not run some simulations to generate estimates on how many ships at a time your computer can handle while still running at 100% speed? Allow the player to set high and low bounds on how far the system can change the PP, there's no point flipping up to insane if it can only handle half a dozen units, and some players would rather have it start to lag rather than drop past low.

I've done stuff like this in the past, and it doesn't tend to end well. For one thing, it's basically impossible to estimate the CPU cost of much in the game. This just wouldn't be possible, unfortunately. |
