Summary0022649: "No Fog of War" (aka permanently watched everywhere) should not invalidate Achievements
DescriptionI always play Classic with Full Visibility and I can't force myself to play this game with fog of war. I use Scout all at the start, which prevents me from getting any achievements.

Edit: For clarity, Badger has edited the title of this bug report. If you disagree with the edit feel free to change it back or let me know and I'll change it back

Yeah, this is called "Cheating" and you won't get any achievements.

The "scout all" debug option isn't really ideal, since it fully explores the map AND makes all explored planets Permanently Watched.

Ideally, there would be one (debug?) option to fully explore the map, that would just put all the planets into Explored status, and a second "no fog of war" option that would cause explored planets to become Permanently Watched, so you could always see AI activity on planets you've explored, but you'd still have to kill command centres to explore.

"The "'scout all" debug option isn't really ideal, since it fully explores the map AND makes all explored planets Permanently Watched."

Yeah, that's the point. Full visibility of the map, without having to kill any command stations. That's how it worked in Classic (see picture). There were also multiple of fog of war options.

I struggle to see why anyone would use just your proposed first option, since there is already a slider to explore up to 40 planets every time you kill a command station. Why split the option into two options where you have to pick one-or-the-other (explore all planets and make explored planets permanently watched)?

The insta-explore option is there mostly for debug purposes and people who want to chill out and watch a war between the AI and the Nanocaust or something.

The "no fog of war" option is there for people who don't like not knowing what's going on (although they *could* just use all Logistics command stations and a lot of Watch Planet hacks for much the same effect, albeit with a cost).

Im not sure if im sensing some hostility here, and the 40 planet scouting is a good idea, but its just a simple option. If it can be added, why not?

I don't read any of this conversation as hostile.

As I understand it, "No Fog of War" means "All planets are permanently watched".

The option for "No Fog of War" exists through the Debug Menu, the question is whether playing that way should invalidate Achievements. I believe using this makes the game significantly easier, so much so that it should invalidate Achievements. This is especially true now that the Hunter Fleet uses information about which planets you aren't watching in order to hide itself before striking.

There is nothing wrong with playing games this way (I often do for myself, especially when testing new code), but it's sufficiently different from playing with the fog of war mechanics enabled that I think it's not a valid comparison for Achievements.

I, unsurprisingly, disagree that "No Fog of war" should invalidate Achievements.

There are so many ways to "cheese" achievements, yet they are not disabled.

1. Going into the XML and fiddling around with the numbers. Maybe I give myself a Devourer Golem with 10x health and 10x damage with the speed of a transport flagship as a starting fleet, then immediately run to the Overlord and destroy it. Or maybe I'll set the AI Budget to 1. or Make planets give 1 million science.
or if you want in-game options:
2. Putting on friendly minor factions. I can set 3 Nanocausts and 2 Marauders to Intensity 10, then go play my PS4 and let them beat the game for me.
3. Allowing everything to zombify.
4. Increase the amount of Data Centers/Major Data Centers/Distribution Nodes.
5.Turn off MDC exo waves.
6. Disable Permadeath for Zenith Generators, Intragalactic Coordinators, Global Command Augmenters.

4, 5, and 6 are minor changes that can potentially have huge impacts by A: allowing you more leeway with AIP, and B: giving yourself more opportunities to permanently increase the strength of your economy/ships.

Or I can set the Hunter Fleet to Difficulty 1, completely negating any advancements that have been made to its code.

"The Hunter fleet is not as smart as it would be" is, in my opinion, a weak argument when compared to the above reasons.

Thanks!

* Using the debug menu to reveal the entire map is no longer considered a cheat, but rather is a lifestyle choice.
** The first game did allow you to set the entire map to visible right from the start, after all.
