Summary | 0021954: Ship range indicator could use colour-coding
Description | Hitting shift-Z in a fight is terribly uninformative right now. The solid pink circles around every ship blend together, making it hard to discern anything from it. It also doesn't show guard post ranges at all, which is arguably the most important function. Suggestion to at least: 1) Make the circles slightly thinner 2) Use a dashed line instead 3) Color-code them according to faction 4) Show guardposts too

Strangely, trying this I can see Guard Posts. |
Well, here's a screenshot without the guardpost ranges. That said, I mislabeled the issue as 1.002, but I'm still on 1.001, if that matters. |
Guardposts are shown at least some of the time, but it seems the range overlay stops working properly if there are too many ships on the planet and in that case some units don't have their range circle drawn. |
I found this: * The range colors are no longer shown differently between player and enemy ships, as that was kind of confusing. ** The ranges of the different types of systems like tractor beams, weapons, gravity weapons, and so forth ARE all now shown even beyond just plaement mode, for your stuff and enemy stuff, and with colors to differentiate them. ** Also, if a planet has been hacked to reduce the range of turrets or guard posts, then that now shows in the range circles properly. ** Thanks to Asteroid for inspiring these changes. So apparently the colours were removed on purpose in the past. |
..How was that confusing? Now you can't tell at all what's going on. |
I don't know. I found the Mantis report that mentioned some of those notes and...that's it. I don't want to try and revert it without knowing the reasoning. I'd guess so the colours of things like tractors aren't confused with different factions? |
Checked and there's the function to let you see the ranges of your selected units, but nothing for hostile units only. Would that be at all useful? I doubt I can manage to get that in (not a programmer), but figured I'd ask? |
Probably, yeah. |
This was the original request I made: https://bugtracker.arcengames.com/view.php?id=21616 All I wanted was to see ranges for effects like gravitic battlestations, the exact implementation was a Chris decision, personally I don't oppose changing it again. |
