Summary0021664: [Regression] Placing over another unit doesn't auto-pick a nearby spot anymore
DescriptionUsed to be (at least in 0.886) that you could place a turret on top of another one, and it would automatically pick the nearest valid spot for it. It cut down on the tedium of placing turrets since you could just spam-ctrl-click the button in one spot to place them all in the general area. Now you have to move your mouse to a new spot for each placement.

This is an intentional change, since people were placing structures in invalid places and then being surprised when they moved out of where they told them to go. It caused a lot of irritation for people who were trying to precisely place turrets and having wrong feedback that a position was ok, only to then have the structure move afterward. That was super frustrating and is the worse case in my opinion (as well as being inconsistent with other games).

For mass placement of turrets, we've reduced the number of turrets to place, but also we have the place 5x modifier. I plan on adding a place 10x, and I suppose I could make using both together place 50x. My plan was to have a thing near the side showing those hot keys while you're in placement mode.

Ok, I understand why you made it work like that now, good thinking. But what about letting us place over other objects when placing 5x or more turrets at a time? When doing that you're not trying to do precise placement.

For mass placement of turrets, multiplying the number of modifier keys might get awkward. I suggest a kind of horizontal radio buttons panel so people can switch between placing 5x, 10x, 20x or more. A single shortcut can be used to cycle through those.

This is working as intended, as noted -- but based on your feedback, a build or so ago I added some more hotkeys for placing more units, and also made the units better about placing more of themselves, and added an interface element telling you what the two (three combinations) hotkeys are for multiples placement. Should be good, now! You can easily pop out stuff 50x at a time, so there's really not repetitive clicking likely.
