Unfortunately, due to the way the GUI is constructed, it's resolution-dependent to an extreme degree. On the newer high-density screens you'll want to choose a lower screen resolution to run it at. For the sequel we are having resolution-independence in mind from the start, but it's one of those things that (with a game with so much GUI, in particular) needs to be built in from the start or it's pretty impossible to retrofit.

For some context: when this game was designed, 1920x1080 was for the hardcore PC fanatics, and most people had 1024x768. 4K was literally not a thing when it came to computer monitors. For a lot of 2D games built further back, by any developer, upscaling the resolution is pretty much what you're going to need to do.

I hate having to give a "sorry can't help" answer like this, but hopefully this at least explains some context of what is going on. With the sequel we're bearing all of the new aspect ratios and screen resolutions in mind, as well as being more future-proof about it so that whatever comes up 8 years from now works okay with it. But even starting with that as the premise and building the GUI from scratch around that concept... whoof, it's one of the harder tasks in the sequel, design-wise.

Hopefully that makes sense, and sorry that I couldn't be of more help. TLDR is to set a lower screen resolution and have your monitor upscale it. :/
