Summary0009905: Allow some Special Forces ships to go into threat fleet when SF is near cap (or some other cutoff).
DescriptionAllow some Special Forces ships to go into threat fleet when SF is near cap. This would allow the AI to be a bit more "active" if it feels that SF is in a good state and it can send some of it on offense.

This would basically be the SF version of the border aggression mechanic, where the AI will free excess (and in some cases, near defender count cap) defenders on a planet.

It doesn't have to be when near the SF cap, it could be some other cap. I know that the cutoff for border aggression to start on a planet takes other things into account than just that planet's defender count cap (AIP being one of them), so something similar could be done with this cutoff for special forces.

I really do not want to see this, at all. I do not want to see special forces EVER becoming threat. The threat mechanic is nice and all, but at the moment we are dumping all of the ships we can think of into threat.

Too many reinforcements? THREAT.
wave hit? THREAT.
CPA? WHY NOT THREAT?

Like.. I kinda understand that its a catch-all for any hostile mobile ships that are on the attack, but I feel like its slightly overused.

Special forces, in its current incarnation, is a DEFENSIVE force. Something the AI really doesnt have - If you walk onto their worlds, sure, theyll defend them, but usually the moment you enter a world, the entire world is released as threat. Not very much of a defense..

I believe that keeping them as this defensive force is both necessary, and interesting.

The "I attack a planet and usually the whole planet is freed" thing is a seperate issue. It seems to be due to the "If this planet is outgunned 2 to 1, then free everything" is so easily triggered because most planets have very little on them.

Also, it would be nice if defenders didn't get freed just because something shot at them, but it took a bit more than that to actually to get them to leave their post.

Both of these points I have posted an idea about at 0009079

Anyways, if you feel that they shouldn't "overflow" into threat fleet (as opposed to "dumb" threat), that's fine. One of the reasons I posted this here is to gauge support or dislike of this idea.
